The Beginning of Adulthood
Aggravation
My eyes are open to nothing but darkness with a slight
orange color coming from the window. The songs of the birds fill my ears. The
rustling of bags and slamming doors are heard in the background. The boys are late as usual, I think to myself. As I pull the covers back slowly, the feeling in my arm returns. I pull over my olive-green
work shirt with sleeves that stop 3/4th down my arm over my head and
down to my waist and then jumping into my dark blue jeans with the flower
designs on the back pockets I start thinking, It’s
time to get to work. I grab my pink pom-pom keys and sluggishly walk to my
car.
Arriving at this place with a green roof and a bright red
GIANT sign, I start to walk in. Chattering of people, beeping of the registers,
rustling plastic bags, and metal smashing into each other is all I hear as I
walk to the black and green time clock. I took care of customers, one by one, and I begin to stare at the
clock. The hour and minute hands are flying around the white clock and now it
is two minutes before I leave. My heart is beating fast and I am grinning from
cheek to cheek when suddenly BAM. A customer is screaming and yells, "It’s all your fault. Corporate needs better
employees. You can’t do nothing. Reprint your coupons so your customers can use
them." I type the difference of the coupon on my register, the drawer opens,
and I hand the couple their money. My hand is shaking, my face is bright red
and I can feel the steam pouring out. I slam the keys down. I stand at the time
clock, Click, click, click, and slide. I
sprint out the door and slam my car door.
Freedom
of the Mind
I pull up in front of a small grey building. Slowly dragging
myself up the two sets of stairs and dropping my keys about 20 times, I
finally open the glass door. As I enter I see nothing but building blocks of red, blue, yellow, and green
scattered across the pink carpet. I notice chewed up tissues all over the brown comfy
sofa. The kitchen is a mess with mountains of dishes in the sink and spread across the greasy, crumb
filled counter and stove. I hear the sound of snoring fill the house and thumping and
crashing coming from the obnoxious puppy and feisty kitten as they play. I look in the mirror on the wall and see black
circles under my eyes, notice yawns happening every ten minutes, and my legs shooting
in pain as they slide across the floor.
I walk up the steps staring down a long narrow hallway leading to a reddish brown wooded door
with a shiny gold knob. When I enter the room the smell of fresh berries
climb up my nostrils. This is the cleanest room out the entire house but it
also the dirtiest. The shiny puddles of translucent liquid fill the floor and
the white rectangular container that holds water is always full of wash clothes
and different bottles of shampoo and soap. Click, as I turn the lock on the
knob. I take a seat on the bright blue fluffy round seat cover. Eyelids close,
inhale deeply, my chest pushes out as my lungs expand, exhale and my lungs
compress. My body untenses and I turn the handle up and SWOOSH is all I hear as
the tub fills up with water and steam fills the air.
Dark
Paradise
Water dripping down my leg and onto the floor and all one can
hear is the squelching sound of my feet as I walk into the bedroom. I slowly
get my undergarments on and now I am slipping up my bright blue and purple
plaid pajama pants that are extremely soft and comfy. I throw on my matching
sweater top. At the bottom of my feet I feel this furry creature and I hear
these meows and purrs that are so loud that it could wake up the neighbors. I
walk downstairs, head down and my legs so heavy I can barely lift my feet up to
walk. I open the white cracked basement door and enter the room of darkness. I
pull the long rough string and flickering light eventually fills the room. I open
the Sheba perfect portions and little pitter patters of tiny paws come racing
down the steps. My legs flinch as my black little fur-ball, Oliver, pushes his body up against them as
he knows that it is feeding time. The glass dish bangs against the floor and the sound
of metal hitting glass fill my ears. The smell of tuna crawls up my nostrils as
I exhaustedly walk back up the two flights of stairs.
I sit down on the memory foam mattress and I lay my head down
on the fluffy rectangle of comfort. I pull the brown thick soft blanket over my
entire body and I wrap it around so tight I feel like I am in my own cocoon.
Metal crashing and yelps from my little puppy fill the room. The feeling of
walking consumes the bed as sharp dagger like objects dig into my neck and then
slowly slide under this furry paw. Wet scratchy sand paper touches my nose and
sounds of a tiny thing breathing fill my right ear. My face lights up by both my
cellular device and my electronic tablet. My camera is on and there is my little
Oliver all snuggled up and his neck tucked under my chin and his two fangs
sticking out of his cute tiny mouth. Click.
My face gets darker and my eyes close slowly. Click. My face disappears into darkness, my eyelids glue shut, and
my breathing slows down and then this dark blue translucent liquid hits the
rock and there I am covered shoulder to toes with warm golden sand staring up
at the stars.
